DESCRIPTION:Our aim for this series is to provide an opportunity for individuals and organizations to engage diverse residents and employees from multiple sectors in the Quad Cities region\, broaden their networks\, and enhance their awareness of diversity issues.\n\n\n\nNationally Recognized Diversity and Multicultural Presenter\n\n\n\nDr. Nancy "Rusty" Barcel  has served as President of Northern New Mexico College since July 2010. Known nationally for her diversity work in higher education\, she brings a national reputation and a 30-year career in higher education at the university level.\n\n\n\nBarcel  received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work from Chico State College.  She continued her graduate and doctoral work at the University of Iowa\, where she became the first Mexican-American to receive a doctoral degree from the University of Iowa.  Prior to her appointment as President of Northern\, she served as founding Vice President and Vice Provost for Equity and Diversity at the University of Minnesota.  From 2001 to 2006\, she served as Vice President and Vice Provost for Minority Affairs and Diversity at the University of Washington\, and from 1996 to 2001 as Associate Vice President for Multicultural and Academic Affairs at the University of Minnesota. She held various positions at the University of Iowa from 1975 to 1996 including Assistant Provost and Assistant Dean with the Office of Academic Affairs. She has served on numerous national\, regional and campus committees and boards.\n\n\n\nBarcel  is recognized nationally for her diversity and multicultural presentations. She has received many awards\, including the NACCS 2012 Scholar award (National Association for Chicana and Chicano Studies)\, the New Mexico Hispano Round Table "Walk the Talk" award\, and was named a Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Iowa.  In 2004\, Barcel  was awarded the Ohtli award\, which is a special recognition presented by the Mexican government to Mexicans or Latinos whose work has benefited Mexicans living abroad.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration is open online through October 4th\, 2016.
