The Greater Quad Cities Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is honored to present Jose J. Soto as the third part of the 2016-2017 Multicultural Speaker Series. This speaker series will focus on the elements necessary to ensure that diversity and inclusion are integrated in substantive and meaningful ways within an organization. Further, Soto will explore and answer questions that will assist attendees in making an honest assessment of their commitment to diversity and inclusion.
 
The Multicultural Speaker Series provides an opportunity for attendees to enhance cultural awareness, fulfill diversity education needs, increase integration into the community, and expand networks across community sectors.  The Multicultural Speaker Series is sponsored by Black Hawk College and Eastern Iowa Community Colleges District.  WQPT is a media sponsor.  Our aim for this series is to provide an opportunity for individuals and organizations to engage diverse residents and employees from multiple sectors in the Quad Cities region, broaden their networks, and enhance their awareness of diversity issues.

About Soto: An Expert Diversity Leader
Since 1992, Soto has served as Vice President for Access/Equity/Diversity at Southeast Community College in Lincoln, Nebraska.  In this capacity, he has planned, developed, and implemented a comprehensive EEO/Diversity program for the college.  He has successfully coordinated and implemented efforts in the area of policy development, training, recruitment/retention of employees, investigating complaints of discrimination and unfair treatment, and ongoing management training and organizational development activities.  Since 1994, Soto’s involvement in higher education has also included teaching three sociology-related courses:
 

  • “Issues of Unity and Diversity in U.S. Society” (Southeast Community College)
  • “Dealing with Diversity” (Southeast Community College), and
  • “Hispanics/Latinos in the U.S. (Nebraska Wesleyan University) 
Soto has worked in the areas of mental health and education for the past 35 years.  He has served as a consultant, educator, practitioner, and an administrator at the local and state levels in the public education and mental health sectors.  His professional activities have ranged from policy and program development, to pre-service and in-service training, to the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of community and institution-based programs.
 
Soto received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico – San German, with majors in Psychology and Social Sciences.  He obtained a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Law.  In 2014, Soto was awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Doane University.  Soto is also a Certified Affirmative Action Professional, a trained mediator, and an administrative hearing officer.
